What if.... Brief

Brief Title
What if...

The Brief

What if a group of graphic design students get together, and decide to solve a problem?

Based on your common interests, research and knowledge, you must establish a “problem” that affects some sector of the general public in Leeds.

You must develop logical, original and adventurous research lines of enquiry in order to justify the relevance of the “problem “ which should inform a range of solutions.

The solution(s) must be resolved, designed and presented in the public domain and recorded appropriately.

ConsiderationsThis is a collaborative process so you must ensure as part of this you discuss, agree and share all responsibilities.

The research process should be gradual and provide the foundation for ideas and challenges, which eventually will inform the solution. It isn’t possible to conclude the brief and then fill in the research gaps afterwards.

This is effectively a live brief so please be considerate, respectful and legal in your activities.

Deliverables

Compelling fact based evidence should be presented to prove that the problem you are address is a genuine problem.

A photographic record of the solution to the problem as presented in the public domain.

Appropriate supporting work, worksheet, notebooks etc…

Evaluation on What If ...

What problem did you indentify?
As a group we decided to focus of the problem of litter in Leeds, this lead to may dicussions about apart problems in Leeds, part of the group felt litter was not a issue at all in the City centre and advertising bin uses would only add to the problem. So we homed in specifically into the Litter probem at LEEDS FEST.

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?
Asking people hwo have been to the festival was a massive part of our research, almost everyone said the litter was a big issue and that people were disrespectful to the environment while there. There was also youtube clips about the festival, New feeds and Photographs which all helped inform us of the problem.

What methods did you use to gather your evidence and what forms did it take?
I began by primary reseacrh, creating questinaires, and using social sights to ask past partisipants what their experience was at the festival. WE then branched out secondary research by researching newspaper articles found on the internet and news videos previously aired on TV. We found alo tof Statistics about the litter which enabled us to can quantative and qualaitive research. ad been to the festival this enabled us to form primary quantitative research. We also find online forums regarding the festival where we able to look at people opinions, givign use secondary qualaitive reseach also.

What methods of research did you find useful and why?
The most useful part of research we gained was theprimary reguarding people's opinions on the rubbish at LEEDS FEST, without this, out project would have been made up by our ideals of what the festival's problems are.

How did these inform your response to your problem?
We constantly asked the target age group if they would buy into our idea of free t-shirt and mrehendise in exchange for a little help towards recyling. We all found this increadably helpful as our audience where always in mind and our focus. Everyone we spook to agreed the free mrehendise idea would encourage them to do their bit.

What methods did you encounter problematic and why? How did you overcome this?
The group as whole found it hard to gather all the differtn types of research, particulary with primary statistc, as LEEDS FEST was not happening when we were on brief. Unfortunatly with the type of brief we found it hard to add the 'LIVE' element, as anything we proposed would still just be a idea. So we focused our attention to making all of our products and contacting the festival with our plans.

What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?
I think more questionarries would have always been useful, we felt you could never have too much research, it all counts.

List 5 things that you have learnt about the design process over the last two weeks;
1) Different types of research such as qualitative and quantitative.
2) Never ending research, helping us to stay on task and relevent.
3) Use everyones skills within the group as we all had different strenghs and weakneses..
4) Listen to outhers more, as everyone has differnt valid ideas and problem solving concepts.
5) Designing witin a gorup can be hard work.

List 5 things you would do different next time;
1) Work better as a team.
2) Plan time more effectivly, so everyone knows what they are doing in relation to everyone else.
3) Work better as a group.
4) Think of the meaing behind all design, the purpose, the aim and the audience at all time.
5) Understand the Brief fully.

Progression

Group Issues:
- More facilities for recycling and more litter bins are needed
- People tend to burn their camping equipment rather than packing it up and taking it back home
- Some people felt that it wasn't their responsibility to clean up the mess
- Incentives such as money or free merchandise would encourage people to clean up

From this we have decided to focus on changing the colour scheme of leeds fest, creating a new strap line, designing mercha ndise that would act as an incentive, possibly trying to encourage the acts playing at Leeds fest to be part of the "Green" Campaign.
